OXFORD United are considering sending Matty Taylor for a scan on Monday to assess the severity of a groin injury which forced him off in the 3-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers.

The 29-year-old was the centre of attention on his first return to the Pirates since leaving for bitter rivals Bristol City in 2017.

Heightened safety measures saw United’s coach arrive with a police escort, but the striker’s afternoon ended after 33 minutes when he limped off after slipping over.

U’s boss Karl Robinson was unable said: “The pitch just gave way underneath him.

“It wasn’t fatigue because it was too early on. I think it just came as a bit of a shock to his system and he tried to react to regain his balance.

“He’ll probably have a scan on Monday.”

Robinson was unable to give an idea on how long the front man would be out, but admitted the need for a scan made it sound a more serious issue.

“It could be and that’s sometimes the worry,” the U’s boss said.

Midfielder Cameron Brannagan suffered a similar issue and came off late on, although it is thought to be a more minor problem.

The injuries added to a poor afternoon for the U’s, who crashed to a third defeat Sky Bet League One defeat in eight days despite having long spells of control.

Robinson said: “Our performances haven’t been poor, but we’ve got to turn good performances into results.

“We didn’t ask enough questions of the goalkeeper at certain stages.

“I think four of the goals we’ve conceded this week have been shots from the edge of the box.

“It’s not like we’re getting carved open, we are just going through that bit of a spell where we believe that a result will come.”
