AHEAD of each of United's Sky Bet League One games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

November 7, 1987: Oxford United 1, Coventry City 0

A LATE Dean Saunders penalty saw Oxford United beat Coventry City and climb to ninth in the first division.

The Welsh striker was sent sprawling by visiting defender Kevan Smith ten minutes from time, before picking himself up to blast the ball past City keeper Steve Ogrizovic.

It was enough to separate the two sides on a tense afternoon at the Manor Ground and gave the U’s their fifth home win of the season.

United played 14 minutes of the first half with ten men after Neil Slatter was caught in the face by an attempted overhead kick from Coventry’s David Speedie.

While he was receiving treatment they almost went a goal down, but Speedie was thwarted by home keeper Peter Hucker after going clear.

Just 45 seconds into the second period the visitors were feeling aggrieved, when the referee ruled out Cyrille Regis’s goal.

The forward was fouled by Tommy Caton and poked the ball into the net as he fell to the ground, but referee Keith Hackett had already blown for a free-kick.

Saunders’ penalty proved the difference, but it was the U’s last league win of a season that ended in relegation. It remains United’s most recent top division victory.
