The Sky Bet League One leaders eventually ran out 4-1 winners, though the teams were tied at 1-1 at half-time, after Stefan Payne cancelled out Luke Garbutt’s brilliant free kick.

Second half goals from Kayden Jackson, Jon Nolan and Kane Vincent-Young made sure of the three points and ensured that Ipswich stayed top.

They were made to fight for the win though, as Rovers put on a gutsy display in the first half and Town manager Lambert was quick to reinforce the point that nothing will come easy for them this season.

He said: “If it was that easy, Notts Forest would have got out of the division, Sheffield Wednesday would have got out of the division, Sheffield United took six years, Norwich, OK, they did it, Leeds United.

“It’s a really tough division, that’s why I think you’ve got to be realistic about what you’re going up against here.

“I had that most of my career as a player, so I know exactly what it’s like. Nothing surprises me.”

Wycombe and Fleetwood sit two and four points respectively behind the league leaders after both enjoye 3-0 wins.

Wycombe saw off Rochdale, while Fleetwood downed Shrewsbury, thanks to goals from Josh Morris, Paddy Madden and Callum Lang's own goal.

Rochdale, fresh off the back of their midweek heroics at Old Trafford, were roundly beaten by an in-form Wanderers side.

A brace from Fred Onyedinma and another goal from Adebayo Akinfenwa gave them the three points, as they had too much for Rochdale.

Sunderland managed to end their winless run with a 2-1 win over MK Dons in front of a restless home crowd.

The home fans were starting to voice their frustration after just ten minutes, as the pressure starts to mount on manager Jack Ross, despite the win on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Peterborough and Wimbledon served up a thriller, Posh came out on top in the end, winning 3-2, with Marcus Maddison amongst the scorers yet again.
