AHEAD of each of United’s games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

September 28, 1966: Oxford United 6, Doncaster Rovers 1

OXFORD United put a disappointing start to the season behind them with a thumping win over Doncaster Rovers.

The U’s had won just one of their opening seven league games before Rovers arrived at the Manor Ground, but they put their opponents to the sword.

The heavy scoreline suggested a dominant U’s victory, but the visitors could have led twice in the first 11 minutes when Pat Quartermain and Cyril Beavon both cleared off the line.

While Rovers were unable to capitalise on those chances, United made the most of theirs.

Graham Atkinson put the home side ahead on 15 minutes when he raced onto a through ball to score his first of the season.

Four minutes later, Ken Hale turned a Mike Morris cross in from close range and though their opponents halved the deficit on 37 minutes, the U’s were unstoppable during a four-goal second half.

Hale put the home side in charge again when he turned in George Kerr’s cross on 49 minutes.

Beavon then made a difference at the other end when he struck United’s fourth, before Morris bagged a deserved goal.

Tony Jones completed the rout in what would be the U’s biggest win of the season.
