OXFORD United are planning to sign a goalkeeper who has played senior international football before the weekend as cover for Simon Eastwood’s injury.

The goalkeeper suffered a knee injury late in Saturday's 1-0 win at Walsall in the Emirates FA Cup.

While Eastwood finished the game at the weekend, the 30-year-old reported some pain and was sent for treatment.

United announced yesterday they expected him to be out for at least a couple of weeks and boss Karl Robinson felt with the risk of it being longer affecting the busy Christmas period they had to act.

He said: “It’s not great. It’s going to be a longer period than we thought.

“We’ll make a signing and it will be announced by Friday. We’ve spoken to four different goalkeepers over the last 24 hours and we’ve decided to go with one.

“All four were very good goalkeepers and we’re quite excited by the one we’ve chosen.

“We’re looking forward to getting the paperwork done tomorrow.

“I can’t say too much, but he’s been promoted out of this league, he’s played 100-odd games in the Championship and is a full international.”

Jack Stevens will play in the Leasing.com Trophy at Exeter City tonight, but with only a handful of U’s games under his belt it was felt they needed more experience for a crunch run of games.

Robinson said: “We’re here to get out of the league and win cup competitions.

“When you think he’s only made one senior (league) start in his career. We’ve got tremendous faith in Jack but right now how many goalkeepers of his age are playing in this league? None, unless you’re talking full internationals.

“He has no experience and while we’re on this run would you really want a mistake to happen and all of sudden have fingers pointed?

“Max Harris would have gone on loan and the two younger keepers are nowhere near it yet, so we have to bring somebody in regardless.

“That’s what we’re going to do.”
