OXFORD United’s transfer window plans have hit a snag after losing out on their top two right back targets.

A loan deal and a permanent transfer have collapsed since the end of last week.

Having brought in four players already in the window, the full back spot to compete with Sam Long after Chris Cadden’s departure this month is a priority.

U’s boss Karl Robinson had always earmarked the next few days as the time to make progress, given last week contained the distraction of Tuesday’s meeting with Ipswich Town.

The club believed they were in the race for two options – the permanent target thought to be Kilmarnock’s Stephen O’Donnell.

But Robinson admitted they had received a double setback.

“We were close and the one we thought we had done we got told (on Friday) that it’s not going to happen,” he said.

“That’s a bit of a kick, but I respect the reasons why.

“We were waiting until after the FA Cup games to do a deal but unfortunately the manager feels it’s better the player stays with their team until the end of the season.

“The other one we were trying to buy is also out, so the loan and the buy have crashed down on us in the last 48 hours, ones we thought we could get done.

“It’s not a financial thing, it’s one or two little tweaks here and there that didn’t materialise.

“It’s a bit frustrating and disappointing, but we do have one or two other options we can exploit.”

Robinson also has an eye out for another striker and cover at left back – although the latter can be filled by Long or left-sided central defender Rob Atkinson.

Reinforcements are also on the way from the treatment room.

Cameron Brannagan missed Saturday’s draw at Gillingham after having a pain-killing injection, but should be available this weekend.

It is also hoped Matty Taylor and James Henry will be back for the Blackpool game on February 1.

While the U’s have collected two points from four games during a period where the squad has been stretched, Robinson is calm.

He said: “I don’t think it’s thrown anything at me that has worried me, or anything I didn’t know.

“We’ll see what materialises.”
