DAN Agyei’s progress will continue to be closely monitored according to Karl Robinson, amid clamour from a section of Oxford United's support for the striker to get more game time.

The 22-year-old scored within two minutes of coming off the bench on Tuesday night in the 2-2 draw at Burton Albion.

It was the second goal in a challenging season since signing in August.

Agyei has played just 91 minutes for the U’s in Sky Bet League One, but with the side struggling for form there is an increasing call to hand the pacy front man an extended run.

Robinson’s intention is to bring him through gradually – and had planned to loan the former Burnley striker out if another forward had joined at the end of the transfer window.

The lack of a signing meant Agyei stayed put and at this stage there is a feeling he offers more as an impact substitute.

“Short-term, possibly,” the head coach said. “I think there’s so much to his game that he’s still got to improve, but that will come with age and experience.

“We always said he was one for the future, he was never one for now.

“We know we’ve got a half-decent player in there, it’s just making sure we manage his development right as well.”

For his part, Agyei is determined to keep his head down and make the most of the opportunities which come his way, as he did at the Pirelli Stadium.

He said: “Everyone wants to play, I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully I’ll get more chances.

“Initially the boys were doing really well so I had to be patient.

“I think we went 20 games unbeaten so I couldn’t really expect to get into the team.

“But now whenever I get minutes I know I need to take it.”
