OXFORD United have a chance to resurrect their interest in Garath McCleary after the winger was released by Reading.

The 33-year-old came close to joining Karl Robinson's side at the start of last season, watching a couple of games from the stands.

But the Oxford-born attacker, who started his career with Oxford City, forced his way back into the Royals' plans, going on to make 24 appearances this season.

McCleary is now a free agent after Reading opted not to offer him a new contract.

It may see United tempted to make a move, particularly as they look to replace the experience of Jamie Mackie, who announced his retirement on Tuesday.

They have had a strong link with Reading players in recent seasons, particularly since Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth, who was previously part of a consortium at the Madejski Stadium, took over the U's in 2018.
