OLLY Huggins continued his strong run by winning the BB&O Amateur Championship for the second time.

Fresh from reaching the last 16 at the English Amateur Championship, the 21-year-old emerged from the pack to win by three shots at East Berkshire.

Only the top 16 and ties after the first round qualified for the second day.

Huggins, from Frilford Heath, carded a level-par 69 to get into a share of fourth place, three shots behind leader Peter Handcock, from Harleyford, near Marlow.

Fellow Frilford players Finlay Szafnauer (69) and Luke Perkins (70) also made the cut.

Heythrop Park’s Joel Smith (70) was another qualifier, but Sam Buss (Witney Lakes), Ross Hampshire (Studley Wood), Lee White and Jamie Burns (both Frilford) missed out.

Huggins seized the initiative on the second day, picking up birdies at the first two holes.

His only bogey of the day came at the fifth, but another shot was picked up at the seventh to ensure he reached the turn at

two-under.

Huggins then pulled away from the field with birdies at the 11th, 12th and 14th to card a superb five-under 64.

It saw him finish three shots clear of nearest challenger Handcock.

Perkins was the next best of the Oxfordshire contingent, signing for a 69 to finish one-over.

  • CARA Gainer was involved in a dramatic end to the Rose Ladies Series.

The Oxfordshire golfer was contesting the Grand Final, which was spread over three venues in as many days.

But the final round, on Wentworth’s West course, was cancelled halfway through after a fire from nearby Chobham Common spread close to the tenth tee.

With organisers unable to find an alternative date, the tournament was cut to 36 holes.

Gainer finished in a share of 12th place on five-over, following a 77 at North Hants and a 70 at The Berkshire.

It saw her end up 14th in the order of merit, with the highlights a pair of joint second place finishes last month at The Buckinghamshire and Bearwood Lakes.
