CHRIS Maguire again enjoyed himself at the County Ground, while fellow former Oxford United players Kane Hemmings and Jake Forster-Caskey netted crucial goals.

We take a look at the reaction from Saturday's games across Sky Bet League One:

Ipswich Town 2, Accrington Stanley 0

Paul Lambert praised in-form Gwion Edwards after Town kept top spot in Sky Bet League One.

The midfielder has five goals in six league games after netting again.

Lambert was without a recognised striker with Kayden Jackson out having had a Covid-19 test, Ollie Hawkins struggling with a groin issue and James Norwood sidelined with a hamstring injury but Edwards stepped up.

“He is doing really well, with his goals and his performances he is doing great,” said Lambert.

“The team is doing really well I don’t think I’ve ever played without a striker. There were a lot of good things there."

Accrington drop out of the top six but boss John Coleman remained positive.

He said: “We gave them enough to warrant a few scares.

"We have to stick together. This team is only going to get better, they are young, keen and work hard."

Blackpool 1, Crewe Alexandra 1

Crewe boss Dave Artell felt his players were under-prepared for the visit of Blackpool after a Covid-19 probe shut their training ground.

The Railwaymen’s midweek trip to Oxford was called off for a second time after the visitors said they could not fulfil the fixture.

Officials from Public Health England were called in to examine whether government protocols were being followed and the Alex squad and staff underwent coronavirus testing.

Previously four Crewe players have produced positive tests, but the latest round saw everyone given a clean bill of health.

Artell said: “You’ve got to give our players a lot of credit with very little preparation and work on the training ground to stick at it and do what they did.

“It is a fairly big mitigating circumstance, it’s not an excuse and we hope it doesn’t happen again. I hope no club has to go through what we’ve had to go through.

“If they do they might come into a game bit short like we did today, but thankfully we’ve got at least a point.”

Tangerines manager Neil Critchley said: “We were pretty much the dominant team and we were well in control. We limited Crewe to very little."

Swindon Town 0, Sunderland 2

Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson was full of praise for his patched-up side after they ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at Swindon.

Goals from Charlie Wyke and Chris Maguire saw the Black Cats ease to victory at the County Ground.

Parkinson said: “It was a great win for us. We had to make a few changes today so I could have easily been standing here making excuses.

“I thought the lads stuck to their task brilliantly."

Swindon first-team coach Tommy Wright said: “I think Sunderland looked stronger, more organised and more streetwise than us.

“We gave a very, very bad goal away – a simple cross and a striker is free to knock it in so we’re disappointed with that."

Charlton Athletic 1, Wigan Athletic 0

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer admitted his new-look side still has plenty of work ahead.

The Addicks have recruited 11 new players with the backing of new owner Thomas Sandgaard, but it was Jake Forster-Caskey whose free-kick proved the difference in a 1-0 win at The Valley.

Bowyer said: “We started really well, on the front foot for the first 20 minutes. And when you are on the front foot like that you need to be more clinical.

"And we will be once we start working with this group more."

The visitors were left frustrated when a goal was ruled out for an apparent foul before shouts for a penalty were waved away towards the end.

“We were unfortunate to come away with nothing,” said Wigan boss John Sheridan.

“We had two stonewall penalties and a goal was disallowed, I don’t even know why."

Portsmouth 0, Doncaster Rovers 1

Doncaster manager Darren Moore hailed the impact of Southampton loanee Josh Sims, who set up the winning goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory at his parent club’s rivals Portsmouth.

Moore said: “We were really pleased to have Josh in that position – he showed great composure.

"His first touch was really good and to pick the pass out to Reece in that position in the box; and it was a neat finish.”

For his opposite number, Kenny Jackett, the biggest concern might be over an injury to starting centre-forward Ellis Harrison, one of only two recognised strikers at the club.

He said: “He has a slight injury, whether it is his hamstring or glute or whatever, it is not too bad. Hopefully, he is not out for too long.

"I don’t know whether he will be fit for Tuesday. The initial assessment is that we hope he is not too bad."

Rochdale 0, Hull City 3

Grant McCann was delighted to see Hull shake off any hangover from their 4-1 defeat at Fleetwood last time out as they earned a 3-0 win at Rochdale.

“It was a really good reaction to what was a bad half of football at Fleetwood last week and since the start of the season that’s all it’s been so far, one bad 45 minutes when we lost,” he said.

Rochdale boss Brian Barry-Murphy said: “It was a very difficult day for us, once it goes to two and three nil, those will be the facts and figures of the game but for long periods of the first half and parts of the second half I felt we were the better team and in control.

“We weren’t happy with the goals we conceded from set plays, we’d worked very hard on that and it was very disappointing."

Bristol Rovers 1, Burton Albion 1

Jake Buxton expects Kane Hemmings to blossom as a Burton striker following his first goal for the club in the 1-1 draw at Bristol Rovers.

The former Oxford United striker opened his account for the Brewers in the 79th minute with a close-range finish.

Buxton said: “I thought he was more of a fox-in-the-box from what I had seen before he joined us, but there is much more to his game than that.

“Now he is off the mark in terms of goals, it will give a huge boost to his confidence and I am sure more will follow."

Rovers boss Ben Garner said: “We can play a lot better and there is disappointment among the players over the loss of two home points.

“We paid for a short period in the game where we sat back and invited pressure. We have talked about it in the dressing room and it is a lesson we need to learn quickly."

MK Dons 2, Gillingham 0

Russell Martin toasted a brilliant transfer window for MK Dons after two of his new strikers fired them to their first League One victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Gillingham.

Cameron Jerome scored his first goal in English football since 2018 to put the hosts ahead while on-loan Carlton Morris added a second four minutes into the second half.

Martin said: “We have so much strength in depth now and we look around at the bench and we have real quality, strength and people that we trust.

"We will need every single one of them."

Gillingham boss Steve Evans said: “We were second best all over the pitch today for long spells.

"We knew what to expect and we knew what we were going to come up against in two of their Championship-quality strikers."

Plymouth Argyle 2, Northampton Town 1

Pilgrims boss Ryan Lowe was quickly looking to the next challenge after Kell Watts bagged an 86th-minute winner.

Lowe said: “Any win is important and this one was pleasing because that’s back to back home wins and six points but now we move on.

“So that way it’s nice but we can’t get carried away. It’s only six league games and 11 points on the board. That’s it, it’s gone we move on to the next one."

Northampton boss Keith Curle admitted: “It comes down to those final moments, the last four minutes of the game and you have got to do your job. Block your man and stay with your man in the box."

Fleetwood 0, Lincoln City 0

Lincoln boss Michael Appleton believes patience is key after his side drew a blank away to Fleetwood.

“I thought we spot on, we were good,” said Appleton.

“We were controlled. We knew what to expect, a lot of long straight passes into Ched Evans and looking to play off him.

“But I thought our two centre halves handled him really well and there was a good concentration throughout the group."

Fleetwood boss Joey Barton is delighted with the progress his side are making, but stressed he is still bedding in a number of new players.

“I thought we were better last Friday,” reflected Barton, referring to his side’s impressive 4-1 home win over Hull.

“But it’s nice to have got our first clean sheet of the season. It wasn’t a boring 0-0 stalemate, though, both teams tried to win the game."

AFC Wimbledon 0, Shrewsbury Town 1

Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts was ecstatic with the result but not the performance after his side snatched an unlikely 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.

The Dons had far the better of the game, but the Shrews nicked victory with their first effort on target in the 90th minute, as Leon Clarke headed home Josh Vela’s corner.

Ricketts said: “Were we good today? No. There was an awful lot that was wrong.

"We set up to play a certain way and I didn’t see it all game, which was disappointing.

“What I did see was a huge amount of determination, commitment, blocks, everything which we’ve come to expect from this team."

Those missed chances cost the Dons dearly at the death and boss Glyn Hodges was left scratching his head at exactly how his side emerged as losers.

“I would have been disappointed with 0-0 let alone 1-0 with the way we looked over 90 minutes and the chances we’ve created,” said Hodges.
