SWINDON Town struck twice late on to claim their first win over Oxford United in 19 years.

Thomas Broadbent scored the Wiltshire side’s first ever goal at the Kassam Stadium with six minutes remaining to level the scrappy derby.

The game looked like it was meandering towards a draw, but Tyler Smith bagged the winner in the final minute to break United’s run of eight games unbeaten against their rivals.

Oxford-born Matty Taylor had scored the derby goal he craved 15 minutes in, chipping deftly home from Liam Kelly’s pass to open the scoring.

It looked like that would be enough, but it was not to be as Swindon took the spoils in the first derby since February 2017.

Karl Robinson named the same starting XI that began last weekend’s win at Wigan Athletic, with Kelly, Marcus McGuane, Taylor and Jordan Obita returning to the team.

Meanwhile, Rob Hall – United’s match-winner when the two sides last met – was named on the bench in place of the suspended Sean Clare.

The absence of fans meant Swindon did not have to deal with the hostile atmosphere of a normal derby and they had the game’s first chance seven minutes in.

Jordan Stevens escaped behind Josh Ruffels to collect a ball over the top, but he miscued the shot badly with only Simon Eastwood to beat.

Taylor was thwarted by Matej Kovar four minutes later when the Swindon stopper pushed his volley behind, but the striker did not have long to wait for his next one.

The same duo linked up again as the midfielder played his teammate in and United’s top scorer chipped the keeper to open the scoring.

Eastwood was forced into his first save midway through the half when he parried Matthew Smith’s effort from the edge of the box, before Swindon captain Mathieu Baudry was forced off through injury and replaced by Rob Hunt.

Kelly was involved again when his 25-yard shot was tipped around the post by Kovar, but visiting wingers Stevens and Joel Grant still looked dangerous.

United would have taken 1-0 at the break, but went close twice more before the whistle.

First Kovar got a slight touch to push Jordan Obita’s powerful effort onto his near post, before Taylor missed a golden opportunity.

McGuane and Kelly linked up well to play in Sam Long down the right and he crossed for the striker, who scuffed wide with the goal gaping.

Swindon were forced into another change when the injured Joel Grant was replaced by ex-U’s man Jack Payne, signalling a scrappy final few moments of the half.

The second period continued in a similar vein, with the first chance coming in the 53rd minute when McGuane had an effort blocked following a flowing move.

Swindon manager John Sheridan brought on Broadbent and Diallang Jaiyesimi on the hour and his side began to threaten more.

Matthew Smith blazed a shot into the car park, before Akinwale Odimayo headed over.

Mark Sykes replaced James Henry and was immediately involved, winning a corner from which Josh Ruffels had a header stopped on the line.

A goalmouth scramble ensued, but referee Carl Boyeson blew for a foul.

Robinson threw on Dan Agyei and Mide Shodipo with 17 minutes left to give United more pace in attack, with McGuane and Obita coming off.

It remained a scrappy affair as the end of the contest drew to an end, when it all fell apart for the U’s.

Thomas Broadbent evened things up when he diverted home following a goalmouth scramble, but Swindon were not done yet.

As the clock ticked over to 90, the substitute won a header and Tyler Smith reached the ball just ahead of Eastwood to touch it into the net and break U’s hearts.
