OXFORD United need to be more ruthless if they are to start climbing the Sky Bet League One table, says James Henry.
The U’s have been unable to turn possession into goals on several occasions this season – including in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Swindon Town.
United led at the break, but spurned chances to give themselves more of a cushion and saw their fragile lead overturned in the second half.
Sam Long: Oxford United need to channel frustration into positive results
Henry, who has scored just twice himself in 2020/21, knows his side need to take pressure off their defence.
The 31-year-old said: “You’re not going to get five golden opportunities every game, so it’s about being clinical when you get that one chance.
“I haven’t got myself in as many goalscoring positions as the last three seasons.
“I definitely need to find myself higher up the pitch, but that’s also a team thing.
“It’s about us playing in better areas so we can create more chances, score more goals and take some pressure off, so we’re not having to hang onto leads.”
Henry has found the net 42 times for United since signing in summer 2017, hitting double figures in each of his three full campaigns.
The midfielder is one of the senior members of Karl Robinson’s squad, but believes all his teammates have a part to play if the U’s are to bounce back at home to Ipswich Town tonight.
He said: “Ultimately we need 11 leaders – that doesn’t mean shouting and screaming, it can just mean doing something constructive with your play.
“We definitely need to communicate that little bit better – one of the easiest things is talk to people on the pitch and make everyone’s job that little bit easier.”
