GAINING a point against Ipswich Town was important for Oxford United, says Marcus McGuane.

The U's created more chances during the Sky Bet League One clash at the Kassam Stadium, but could not find the net and had to settle for a goalless draw.

It saw Karl Robinson's side drop a place to 20th and they could end tonight in the relegation zone if Bristol Rovers beat Gillingham.

Although United were disappointed not to triumph, McGuane thought it was vital they followed Saturday's defeat to Swindon Town with a positive result.

“We need to get higher up the table, so we’ll take one point," the midfielder said.

“We wanted to get the win, but one point is something to build on against Hull.

“To have another game straight away was good for us so we could try to rectify our mistakes from Saturday."

The stalemate saw United keep their first league clean sheet since February, ending a run of 18 games without a shutout.

And McGuane believes the visit of table-toppers Hull on Saturday is a perfect opportunity to build on the Ipswich display.

He said: “I think that shows the team’s mentality.

"We’re a family and families fight for each other, so we showed that today by keeping a clean sheet after not performing great on Saturday.

“I think it’s great that we’ve got the league leaders to prove ourselves against top opposition."
