January 2, 2016: Notts County 2, Oxford United 4

OXFORD United showed their intentions for 2016 by starting the year with a dramatic comeback to beat Notts County.

The U's had gone ahead through Liam Sercombe's penalty in first-half stoppage time, but goals from Jon Stead and Curtis Thompson after the break put the hosts 2-1 up.

With 11 minutes to go it looked like United were heading for defeat in the Sky Bet League Two clash, but Alex MacDonald, Callum O'Dowda and Kemar Roofe struck late on to stun County and secure victory.

The visitors were in control from the first whistle, but despite Chris Maguire and John Lundstram going close they were unable to make the pressure pay.

That changed in first-half stoppage time, when Sercombe was brought down by goalkeeper Roy Carroll inside the area and got up to fire home from the spot.

George Baldock almost increased the lead after the break when he struck the post, but it was the hosts who struck on the hour, against the run of play.

Stead headed Stanley Aborah's free-kick past Sam Slocombe and with 14 minutes left County appeared on their way to a shock victory.

It was a classy goal, too, as Thompson played a one-two and found the net from the edge of the box.

After going behind for the first time in the contest, it took United just three minutes to equalise when MacDonald latched on to Patrick Hoban's header and scored from close range.

Both sides searched for a winner, but the U's dug deep to score twice in the final moments.

As the game ticked into the 90th minute, Carroll saved from Roofe but O'Dowda followed up to find the top corner from the edge of the area - beating two defenders on the line.

Roofe's effort from 20 yards finally secured victory a minute later, as United continued their march towards promotion.

United: Slocombe, Baldock, Mullins, Wright, Skarz, MacDonald, Sercombe, Lundstram, Maguire (O'Dowda 73), Roofe, Taylor (Hoban 73).
