KARL Robinson felt Oxford United only had themselves to blame for their Papa John's Trophy semi-final defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

The U's were below-par from the start of the last-four clash, as the Sky Bet League Two side ran out 2-0 winners to book their place in next month's final at Wembley.

Tranmere, who are a division below United, were on top for much of the first half and led at the break thanks to Kaiyne Woolery's goal.

The U's improved after half-time, but Matty Taylor's penalty miss was the closest they came as a Kieran Morris strike secured victory for the visitors.

United's display in the first period angered Robinson, who revealed the dressing room was 'devastated' at full-time.

The U's head coach said: "In the first half our attitude was poor, I thought we were second to everything.

"Certain players were miles off it and they know who they are.

"I’ll take responsibility as well – I pick the team, I motivate the team, so I have to look at myself.

"Certain people let themselves down.

"In the second half I thought we were okay, but every chance we had hit the post, the bar, and we had the penalty miss.

"If a team from a division below is going to beat you, you have to miss those chances.”

Taylor struck the woodwork twice in quick succession after his penalty and Robinson admitted it was one of those nights for the striker.

He said: “You’ve seen Matty in bigger games put a foot through it.

"I saw the keeper go early and I thought ‘goal’.

"Then all of a sudden the ball kept going and nearly hit the picture of Jim (Smith) at the back of the stand.

"He was the first one to put his hands up to apologise for some of the misses today.”
