Gatlin O’Donkor and Adam Smith were on target as the U’s leapfrogged AFC Bournemouth at the summit of EFL Youth Alliance Southwest Division.
United were the better side from kick-off and took the lead after 23 minutes.
The impressive Josh Anifowose played in O’Donkor, who showed great composure to beat goalkeeper Conor Manderson.
Izzy Kara spurned Pompey’s best chance of the first half five minutes before the break, before Will Owens could have made it 2-0 but headed wide.
Kie Plumley brilliantly denied Harrison Brook as the visitors piled on the pressure after the restart, but Tyler Goodrham’s entrance off the bench helped turn the tide.
The midfielder was involved as United countered in stoppage-time, with Smith finishing at the back post to secure victory.
