JAMIE Hanson is aiming to finally start building some momentum with Oxford United in tonight’s derby with Swindon Town.

The midfielder’s 2020/21 season has reflected his two-and-a-half years at the U’s, having made just 15 appearances after suffering injuries and falling out of favour.

But a tenacious display against Charlton Athletic on Saturday has put the 25-year-old in contention to start at right back this evening, with Sam Long still out with a hamstring issue.

Hanson said: “I felt it was one of my best games in an Oxford shirt.

“The first couple of interceptions really got my confidence back and that’s what you need as a player.

Karl Robinson: We need no extra motivation to beat Swindon

“Hopefully it’s not a one-off, I want to get into a run when I can really put a marker down.”

The United bench could have been forgiven for fearing the worst when Hanson was substituted with cramp late in Saturday’s game.

A series of muscle injuries restricted the former Derby County trainee to just 12 appearances between September 2019 and December 2020.

He has played twice more than that in the last three months, but was often left out of Karl Robinson’s match day squad before United’s recent spate of injuries.

Hanson has kept his head up, though, and is eager to seize his chance.

He said: “I’ve always believed that I could do a job for the club.

“I’ve missed out on a couple of squads and you have to respect the gaffer’s decision.

“It’s frustrating, but you have to get behind the boys and wish them well.”

The congested Sky Bet League One schedule means the utility player could get plenty more opportunities before the end of the season.

United have played two matches every week since the end of January, but the Hanson believes any fatigue will go out the window tonight.

He said: “I know it’s relentless, but you just want to play games.

“I don’t think anyone will be feeling tired, because it’s a big game so everyone will be raring to go.”

While Hanson has been in-and-out, he joined a defence of ever-presents in Elliott Moore, Rob Atkinson and Josh Ruffels on Saturday.

United have scored only once in their last six matches, but the trio have performed solidly at the other end to help their side keep three clean sheets.

He said: “All three of them have been outstanding this year.

“Rob didn’t play last year and he’s come in and been one of our most consistent players, it’s the same with Josh and Elliott.

“Longy’s been our best player this season, so I’ve got big boots to fill.”
