OXFORD United visit Sunderland tomorrow for an important end-of-season game - just like the last time they won there.

In April 1994, though, the U's were not in contention for the play-offs, but hunting a victory that would boost their second-tier survival hopes.

Oxford Mail sports reporter James Roberts looks back at the state of play before a memorable 90 minutes at Roker Park and what it meant for United.

Despite signing Paul Moody, Phil Whitehead, John Byrne and Matt Elliott that season, the U's were battling at the wrong end of the Division One table.

A four-game winless run prior to the Sunderland clash left Denis Smith's side second-bottom, with three matches to play.

Herald Series:

Goals from Phil Gray and Gordon Armstrong put the hosts 2-0 up inside 21 minutes, but Moody hauled United level before Chris Allen's screamer sealed victory.

It moved the U's out of the relegation zone, but they were far from safe.
