OXFORD United are asking supporters to help them set up a new 'Fans Council'.

The group would see U's followers from a range of backgrounds meet with staff and board members regularly to provide feedback and ideas.

The 'Fans Council' name is a working title and would involve existing organisations such as independent supporters' trust OxVox, The Yellow Army and the Armed Forces Supporters Group.

But it is also hoped that fans representing different ages, genders, ethnic minorities and more will come forward.

Managing director Niall McWilliams told United's official website: “It’s something we have been planning for a while and obviously like the rest of the country for over a year we have had to adapt and find new ways of communicating.

"That has helped us really focus on how we can structure the way that fans help us build better links between them and the club.

“For example, we have been talking for a while about a disabled fans group: can we give them a direct way of talking to us so we can ensure that what we offer them is even better?

"We have hundreds of ‘senior’ fans, people whose experience we should be listening to.

"The same for junior fans; wouldn’t it be nice to have a ‘junior president’ to represent our younger fans?

"There is already a LBGT group who should have a voice.

"Can we have a BAME group within a proper structure, or maybe fans from each stand?"

OxVox chair Paul Peros added: "We've been involved in the early stages of this idea and are keen to help any way we can.

"We feel it's really important that the club keeps communicating with the fans.

"It's a great idea and it's important it's actioned to show the effectiveness."

United hope to invite all groups to an initial meeting attended by head coach Karl Robinson, supporter liaison officer Andy Taylor and more key staff.

The club wants fans to email ataylor@oufc.co.uk with their thoughts and ideas, as well as any groups they feel should be represented, and will report back after the Sky Bet League One season finishes on May 8.
