ROB Atkinson says he is constantly learning after being named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season.

The 22-year-old endured a tricky start to the campaign, having been sent off on the opening day at Lincoln City.

That decision was overturned, and Atkinson has since gone from strength to strength.

Signed from Eastleigh in January of last year, the defender has filled the gap left by the summer departure of Rob Dickie to Queens Park Rangers.

“This time last year, I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be in the team of the season for League One,” said Atkinson.

“Personally, it’s quite an achievement.

“The start of the season was tough, there was the red card and the injuries.

“I’d never been sent off before and although it’s not great, it’s an experience and something I can learn from.

“With every game, I feel like I learn something – whether that’s from the coaching staff, my teammates or even the opposite strikers.

“Every game you come up against something different and it’s always a challenge, but one I relish.”

Atkinson said his accolade comes during a season where he has bounced back through one of the toughest fixture congestions he’ll ever experience in his career.

He also praised his fellow defenders, and said achieving something alongside his teammates would be more important to him than any personal award.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, specifically the defence,” he said.

“Everywhere I look, it’s solid and such a good platform.

“I’d take promotion, play-offs or anything team based over anything individual.

“It’s credit to us as a team that we’re still in and around it with two games to go – there’s everything to play for.”

Atkinson scored his first goal for United in the 4-1 win at home to Shrewsbury Town earlier this month, with the two sides set to face each other tomorrow.
