CAMERON Brannagan toasted a very happy birthday as Oxford United beat Burton Albion to reach the Sky Bet League One play-offs for a second successive year.

The U's brushed the Brewers aside 4-0 in their last match of the regular season to finish sixth, thanks to Accrington Stanley's 1-0 win at Fratton Park.

It means they will face Blackpool at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday, May 18, with the semi-final second leg at Bloomfield Road three days later.

Mide Shodipo and Matty Taylor got the ball rolling with goals in the first half an hour, with Elliot Lee and Sam Winnall adding a third and fourth after half-time.

Brannagan was named man of the match on the day he turned 25 and he could not have been happier at full-time.

The midfielder said: "It’s the best birthday present I could have asked for.

“The boys were top drawer today, the attitude was second to none.

"We knew we had to win the game and with that mentality you can win any game.

“We need to take that into the play-offs and hopefully we can go one better this time.

“At half-time, we were looking and saw Portsmouth were 1-0 down.

“It spurred us on even more – there was no way we were losing this game. Every man showed that fight and spirit today.

“Football’s a weird and wonderful game - we just had to take care of ourselves and we did that.”
