OXFORD United will head to Bournemouth next weekend for their pre-season training camp.

The U's travel to the south coast after their planned trip to Spain fell through amid uncertainty over international travel.

Instead, United will stay near Bournemouth and train in the nearby town of Wimborne, before returning in time for their first pre-season friendly against Oxford City on Friday, July 16.

The U's returned to Oxford Sports Park yesterday for pre-season testing and have their first full day on the pitches today.

“We will work hard for the next few days, get that core fitness, and then it’s important we have a chance to get away as a group," head coach Karl Robinson told the club's official website.

“The initial plan was to go to Spain but clearly we can’t do that and we always had a Plan B where we could stay in this country and train away from any distractions.

“We will stay near Bournemouth and we will train at a great club down there in Wimborne who have invested heavily in the pitch and facilities and have been fantastic in helping us organise everything.

“We plan in great detail, we know we will be looked after.

"It will be great to all be together and totally focussed on both the fitness levels and our beliefs and aims for the season ahead.”

United train tomorrow before a day off on Sunday, with a full programme ahead of them next week.

The U's had planned to travel to Spain, where they would have played the Gibraltar national team and Sky Bet League One counterparts Plymouth Argyle.

They were always going to make a late decision on the trip, though, with the country remaining on the government's 'amber' list for international travel.

This means visitors must quarantine for ten days or take a ‘Test to Release’ test halfway through that time, where a negative swab allows you to end isolation.

As an elite sports team, United would have been allowed to train as a bubble during that period and even play friendlies against clubs doing the same.
