OXFORD United have signed left back Steve Seddon from Birmingham City.

The 23-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, having agreed a three-year deal with the U’s.

Steve Seddon fact file: All you need to know about Oxford United's new signing

Seddon’s move was delayed by three weeks after he caught coronavirus, but the defender has recovered and is keen to put that behind him.

He said: “I’m just buzzing to finally get in the building and meet some of the boys.

“It’s been an up and down three weeks with a lot of different worries, but it’s great to be here.

“I’m feeling fit, I had a couple of days in bed and I’ve been working back from there.

“Now I’m at the stage where I feel ready to go.”

Seddon came through Reading's youth academy before joining Birmingham, where he made 12 senior appearances for the Sky Bet Championship club - ten of them starts.

He made his mark on loan, spending the beginning of 2018/19 at Sky Bet League Two side Stevenage before the first of two spells at AFC Wimbledon, where he returned last season.

Seddon joined Portsmouth in January 2020 and became a fan favourite, starting the second leg of their Sky Bet League One play-off semi-final defeat to United last July.

Pompey have tried to sign the full-back in the previous two transfer windows, but the U’s presented a convincing case as they hunted a replacement for Josh Ruffels.

Seddon said: “Oxford put themselves forward first and that was all that needed to be said.

“As a footballer, you want to be wanted and for people to see potential in you.

“Speaking to the gaffer on the phone, he wanted to improve me and that was a big thing as I know there’s things I’ve got to improve on to go to the next level.

“I see this club going to that next level and I want to be part of that.”

Seddon’s brush with Covid came before 12 United players were forced to self-isolate due to an outbreak of the virus and Karl Robinson was delighted to get the deal over the line.

The U’s head coach said: “The medical got delayed for obvious reasons, it has taken three weeks but that’s just the circumstances we’re in.

“I’ve been pulling my hair out over this one but we’re really pleased.

“He’s a young player we believe is fantastic going forward.”
