Did you know?
- Whyte almost joined Leeds United in 2018, only for the move to fall through – and the U’s signed him instead.
- United are thought to have paid about £100,000 for the winger when he signed three years ago – they sold him to Cardiff City for a fee in the region of £2million 12 months later.
- Whyte scored with his first touch in senior international football, finding the net less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute against Isreal in September 2018.
Previous manager said:
Hull City manager Grant McCann hailed Whyte’s versatility after the 25-year-old scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers during his loan spell earlier this year.
“Gavin was part of a Cardiff team that got to the top six of the Championship, he’s a top player, an international player,” he told Hull Live.
Maybe he’s been used to playing off the right a lot in his career, but we know he can play off the left.
“He’s probably a bit more direct when he plays off the right – what I mean by that is off the right he’ll take people on more, off the left he finds little pockets, he’s clever on the ball.
“It’s a nice string to his bow that he can play in a few positions.”

Whyte’s sole hat-trick in English football came on Easter Monday 2019, when he secured a 3-2 win for ten-man United at Shrewsbury Town.
