ALEX Gorrin says Oxford United must maintain the physicality they showed against Wycombe Wanderers to succeed in Sky Bet League One.

The Chairboys’ style was as robust as ever at the Kassam Stadium, but the U’s stood firm to claim a 0-0 draw.

It was only United’s second clean sheet of the season and came after conceding seven goals at Cambridge United and AFC Wimbledon the previous week.

Wycombe ensured the game was played on their terms, but Gorrin felt they dealt with it well.

The verdict: It was pleasing to see Oxford United stand up to Wycombe test

The midfielder said: “If we want to get out of this league, we have to be solid off the ball.

“It’s such a competitive league you have to be good at every aspect.

“Everyone showed they can do it.

“Everyone at this club’s very physical and they can all make a tackle, so I think we can do it consistently.”

United were much harder to break down than at Wimbledon the previous weekend, when they conceded twice from set-pieces to lose 3-1.

The U’s would have gone top of League One if they had won at Plough Lane, but the draw with Wycombe saw them fall to tenth – although they are only two points off second.

The visitors successfully slowed the game down and U’s fans quickly grew frustrated, as their side dominated possession without creating clear-cut chances.

It was a battle, but Gorrin – who picked up his third booking of the season in stoppage-time – did not mind.

He said: “When I first came to England, I was aware that it was more physical.

“Last year any touch (was penalised), it was like being back in Spain.

“That’s something I really enjoy here, the physical side of the game.

“The fans love that side as well.”
