KARL Robinson is relishing a trip to one of English football’s historic stadiums tomorrow.

The Oxford United head coach takes his side to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, back in the third tier for the first time since 2012.

The U’s last played a league fixture at the 40,000-seater ground in April 1991, when goals from John Durnin and Paul Simpson secured a 2-0 win in the old Division Two – although they did return in 2015 for a 1-0 defeat in the Capital One Cup second round.

United have picked up just one point from four matches on the road in Sky Bet League One, but Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Gillingham and the midweek thrashing of Accrington Stanley has Robinson wanting more of the same.

He said: “I’ve been there quite a lot as a manager and it’s a really special place.

“Having two massive football clubs in the same city breeds a tremendous atmosphere.

“People talk about the away form, but sometimes that can be (down to) luck.

“It can be defining moments in a game that did or didn’t go your way.

“I don’t think we need to change a great deal of what we’ve been good at on the road.

“We go there in good form and we’re looking forward to it.”

Eighth-placed United arrive in Sheffield higher in the table, although Wednesday only trail on goal difference and have a game in hand.

The hosts signed former U’s players Mide Shodipo and Marvin Johnson over the summer, while 2016 promotion-winning centre back Chey Dunkley was already in the building.

Wednesday boss Darren Moore has built an impressive squad, despite the departure of several high-profile players at the end of last season amid various financial issues.

Robinson said: “He’s just a sensational human being.

“Sometimes we speak about how we get on or don’t get on with other managers, but people who know Mooro will tell you he’s a real gentleman.

“He’s a football person, his staff are the same and he’s at an unbelievable football club.”

Ex-Wednesday striker Sam Winnall is absent tomorrow through illness, while another former Owl, Jordan Thorniley, is doubtful after a tooth problem kept him out of Tuesday’s win over Accrington Stanley.

Gavin Whyte returned to training yesterday as the U’s look to pick up where they left off in midweek.

Robinson said: “I think you saw a greater edge to us in the Gillingham game, more aggression in trying to get bodies and the ball in the box.

“When you have a philosophy and things don’t go quite right it’s so much easier to fix than when you’re chopping and changing.

“People think you can go from one way of playing to another, but this is what loses football clubs their identity.”
