MATTY Taylor joined an exclusive club on Saturday.

The striker, from Kidlington, became only the 15th man to reach 50 Oxford United goals with his double against Sheffield Wednesday.

Taylor achieved his half-century in 127 games, the majority of those coming since he returned to the club, initially on loan from Bristol City, in 2019.

The 31-year-old and teammate James Henry are two of only ten players to reach the 50-goal mark since the U’s joined the Football League in 1962.

Peter Foley achieved the milestone in 167 games, while Paul Simpson did it in 168, Henry in 189, and Joey Beauchamp and Matt Murphy both took 264 matches.

But these four players did it quicker:

JOHN ALDRIDGE (reached 50 goals in 80 games)

It is testament to Aldridge’s quality that he was the only member of the 50-goal club to play in the top division for United, yet he reached the milestone fastest.

One of the most prolific strikers of his generation, he joined in March 1984 and scored four times before the end of that season as the U’s won the Third Division under Jim Smith.

Aldridge then fired another 34 for the Second Division title-winning team in 1984/85.

He continued to score freely in the top tier and reached his half-century in spectacular fashion.

With the U’s 3-0 down at home to Ipswich Town in November 1985, Aldridge bagged a ten-minute, second-half hat-trick to help secure a 4-3 comeback win.

The forward's impressive goal ratio continued, ending his United career with 90 in 141 matches.

JAMES CONSTABLE (91 games)

United were not in the Football League when the striker joined in summer 2008 – but he played a huge part in getting them back there.

‘Beano’ scored 26 goals in his first season, initially on loan from Shrewsbury Town, and repeated the feat in 2009/10 – although he reached his half-century earlier than the records show.

Constable’s hat-trick against Chester City in August 2009 was taken away after their opponents were expelled from the league the following March, with their results expunged.

It means his 50th strike officially came in the first leg of the Blue Square Premier play-off semi-final against Rushden & Diamonds.

Constable ended his career with 106 goals in 280 games, one short of record-holder Graham Atkinson.

GRAHAM ATKINSON (106 games)

The club’s all-time top-scorer was well on the way to 50 goals by the time United were elected to the Football League, having scored 21 times in the Southern League.

But the majority of his 107 strikes came as the U’s climbed from the basement division to the second tier in six years.

Atkinson bagged double figures in four consecutive seasons from 1964/65 and scored his 50th goal in the second of those.

The midfielder was on target twice in a 2-0 Division Three win over Grimsby Town in February 1966 as he reached his half-century in just over 100 matches.

Atkinson’s 15-year U’s career eventually ended in 1974, having racked up 298 games.

PAUL MOODY (110 games)

The striker hit the ground running after signing from Southampton in February 1994, scoring eight goals before the end of the campaign despite United’s relegation to Division Two.

Moody bagged 24 the next season and hit exactly the same figure in 1995/96 as the U’s came from nowhere to gain promotion back to the second tier.

His 50th strike came in one of the most memorable games of the campaign: a 3-0 win at Wycombe Wanderers.

Moody scored the third goal at Adams Park and performed his trademark somersault as Stuart Massey hung from the crossbar, creating an iconic United image.

He went on to score 75 goals in 187 appearances.
