JAMIE Cumming has revealed the role Oxford United goalkeeping coach Lewis Price played in him joining the club on loan from Chelsea.

Cumming worked with Price, and former U’s head coach Liam Manning, at MK Dons.

The 24-year-old said that he spoke with Price ahead of the loan switch, and that he played his best football under the former Wales international.

Cumming said: “Pricey brought me under Liam Manning, the old manager here, so I know Pricey well.

“We had a conversation a couple of weeks ago regarding this, and I probably played my best football under Pricey, with his coaching and guidance, so it’s definitely a big reason for me coming here.

“It’s a really exciting one, we’re at the right end of the table as things stand.

“I think I can come in and help the group, and use my experience from the past, and I’m really looking forward to it.

“In order to compete, we’re going to have to put a good run together. We’re in fifth position now, and it’s all to play for.

“Anyone can go on a run and win a few games in a row, and be right up there. I think it’ll be a really exciting second half of the season.”

On comparisons with James Beadle, who spent the first half of the season on loan at United, Cumming said: “I’ve got different qualities, all keepers are different. I watched the last few games and I think there are ways I can help the team in certain circumstances.

“The way the team plays suits me as well, with the ball, and I can bring some different qualities, and maybe some experience. I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s a massive six months. I’ve played in League One for the last two seasons and I still have ambitions to play at the top level.

“It’s a big six months for me to come in here and impress, and then who knows what will happen in the summer.

“The objective now is to try and get this club out of the league.”

Cumming meanwhile pinpointed former Chelsea goalkeeper Hilario and Blues goalkeeper coach James Russell as among the biggest influences during his time at Stamford Bridge thus far.

He said: “It’s a great set-up with great coaches. I’ve trained with some really top keepers and various different coaches over the years, so I think the pedigree and training that I’ve had through the academy really sets me up well.

“Hilario and James Russell for me are the main two I’ve worked with throughout the years, and are still at the club now. They’ve been brilliant and worked with me from a young age, and seen my progression, and I’m still in contact with them now.”
