CAMERON Brannagan says Oxford United’s capitulation at Bolton Wanderers was among the worst moments of his career.

The U’s were thrashed 5-0 in a humiliating display which saw them outplayed by the Trotters from pretty much the first whistle.

Nathanael Ogbeta and Josh Dacres-Cogley handed the home side a 2-0 lead at the break, before George Thomason, Aaron Collins and Josh Sheehan netted in a brutal 10-minute spell during the second period.

United midfielder Brannagan said: “The big one is just to apologise to the fans that travelled all that way. From me and on behalf of the lads, it was no way near good enough.

“It was an embarrassment, I felt ashamed, and I’ve never felt like that in my career.

“Frustrated isn’t the word. I can only apologise to the fans that travelled and everyone that watched it because it was embarrassing.

“We’ve come in and watched it in the meeting, and spoken about it. That’s gone now because we’ve got another one Saturday.”

He added: “All sorts has been said, but that stays behind closed doors. We’re looking at Saturday now, and we want to win.

“It’s about being honest with each other, and saying what’s right and what’s wrong. That’s the only way you get better and that’s the way you’ve got to be.

“If there isn’t fire in your stomach to put things right, then you’re in the wrong industry. It’s definitely in my stomach and I’ve never been this wound up in my career, so I’m looking forward to Saturday.”

On his own role as a senior figure in the U’s squad, Brannagan said: “I’m an old lad now and a bit experienced, so I want to take that responsibility because I do care about the lads. I want to win and so do they.

“There isn’t one player in that dressing room who isn’t frustrated and hurting. Honesty is the key and we can only put it right Saturday.

“I care so much about this club. I’ve been here for a long time. Losing games like that the other night, and losing in general, I hate.

“I’ll aways give 110 per cent, no matter what the result. The other night was probably the worst night of my career, and that’s set a fire in my stomach even more.”

He added: “We’ve got to be positive in some sort of way because we’re still in and around there.

“The manner of the defeat the other night was embarrassing from start to finish. I don’t think we had a shot on target, and that’s no way near good enough.”

The game against the Trotters was televised live on Sky Sports, but Brannagan said that had no impact on his feelings towards how the match panned out.

“I don’t care if it was on TV or it wasn’t, it was just no way near good enough, and that was from start to finish,” he said.
