MATT Williams hopes Chinnor’s match against local rivals Rams is a watershed moment for the club.
The Thame-based side are in action at Kingsey Road tomorrow (7.45pm) in their first National League 1 fixture to be played on a Friday night.
The contest sees the division’s fourth-placed side host a team only kept off top spot on points difference and Williams urged supporters to turn out.
Chinnor’s director of rugby said: “We’re very much looking forward to this local derby.
“Playing on a Friday night gives general rugby fans the chance to view the highest standard of rugby available in this area.
“It’s very much a new thing for us and we just want to see whether it can generate a large crowd and an exciting atmosphere.
“It’s always a physical, attritional game against Rams, so supporters will get bang for their buck.”
The Oxfordshire side will be looking to avenge their last-minute 27-21 defeat to tomorrow’s opponents earlier this season and chairman Simon Vickers is relishing the challenge.
He said: “There is no doubt that the stakes are that much higher, the contest that much more keenly fought and any victory that much sweeter, when a side triumphs in a big derby clash.”
He added: “The opportunity for redemption in front of what will no doubt be a great crowd will result in the kind of atmosphere that you have to be there to appreciate.”
