Architect unveils new Swirl sculpture

Herald Series: Maria Rosa Kramer Maria Rosa Kramer

ARCHITECT Maria Rosa Kramer joined the unveiling of the £85,000 Swirl sculpture she designed for Didcot’s Orchard shopping centre.

The stainless steel sculpture on steps near Sainsbury’s represents the peeling skin of an apple.

London-based Ms Kramer, 39, had her design selected in a competition advertised by the Arts Council of England.

Following the official unveiling on Saturday, the mother-of-two said: “It was fantastic to finally see it in context and I think it looks better in reality than it did in the designs too.

“I like the mirror-effect of the stainless steel, because people have been stopping to look at their reflections, so that’s great.

“Public spaces is something I’m very interested in and the idea with this was to make something that strengthened the identity of Didcot.”

"... represents the peeling skin of an apple"

Metaphors about things unraveling, unpeeling and falling apart will abound.
What a total waste of money, and typical to "get someone in" from London rather than a local artist.

How about a sculpture of Didcot A Power Station or some play on that? Far more befitting this town.

If it had cost £10,000 I may have thought it was ok.

The comments above sum up the lack of lateral, creative thinking when commissioning a creative artist and this piece of artwork.

Goodness knows what you must have thought when all that money was spent on Cornerstone Arts!
