A PILOT who wants to inspire young girls to take to the skies has written a children’s book about exactly that.

Zoe Cameron, 37 lives in Thame and she has the job many children dream of; she is a pilot.

Based at Heathrow Ms Cameron works for Virgin Atlantic and mostly flies long-hall passenger flights to America.

After 14 years of flying, she decided to fulfil another one of her ambitions and write a book.

'Ada and Emily Take to the Skies' is a children’s book about two young girls who decide that they want to become pilots. The two girls design and build their own aeroplane and take it on an adventure.

The book takes inspiration from the pilot’s own childhood dreams of aviation.

Herald Series:

She said: “I have always been interested in flying, my dad was a pilot and he always made model aeroplanes in the shed. So, I always had this idea that it would be amazing to be able to build my own full-sized aeroplane in the shed and fly it.”

Ms Cameron is the mother to a four-year-old boy and when he was a new born she took the opportunity to start writing the book while he was napping.

She said: “As I was writing it, I realised it could be a good tool to get younger children to be inspired to get involved in aviation.”

Ms Cameron deliberately made the characters girls as she wants the book to inspire girls to believe they can pursue a career in aviation and become a pilot.

She hopes the book will break down barriers and prejudices about what are considered to be jobs for girls and boys.

She said: “There are still a lot of people who think women can’t do it. Girls do not really grow up think it is something they would like to do.

“I didn’t because my dad was a pilot and my parents always said to me you can do whatever you want. From that point of view, I was lucky that it never occurred to me.”

Despite being in a fortunate position, she still encountered barriers when perusing her dream.

She said: “When I was at school people would say that is a male dominated job, is that really what you want to do, so I am sure that is the same for a lot of other people.”

'Ada and Emily Take to the Skies' is now available online. It can be purchased on Amazon and on the high-street in Waterstones.
