A HANDCRAFTED bench has been unveiled in Wallingford to celebrate an historic railway.

The bench, which was funded by Lidl, was unveiled by Mayor Marcus Harris at the Wallingford and Cholsey Railway.

It was a project headed by the Wallingford Arts Working Group with councillor Ros Lester taking the lead to ‘enhance the link between Lidl and the town centre’.

Ms Lester commissioned the work used Lidl’s section 106 funds to design the bench and celebrate the railway which is Lidl’s neighbour on St John’s Road.

It depicts an old bunk steam engine and carriage and was built and carved by Pete Walker and David Williamson over a period of two years.

Mr Harris unveiled the bench earlier this week and thanked Mr Walker and Mr Williamson for their ‘highest quality workmanship’.
