The Lib Dems have lost Wantage Town Council to the Conservatives.

The Tories now hold 11 seats, the Lib Dems four, and Labour, one.

Among Lib Dem victims was mayor Jim Sibbald.

Fellow Lib Dem town councillor Patrick O’Leary blamed the result on his party’s performance in Parliament and the alternative vote referendum.

He said: “We felt the ‘No’ vote got the Conservative vote out.”

He said the Lib Dems, as the new opposition, would make sure the Tories spent council reserves wisely.

But Tory councillor John Morgan said: “People have been fed up with the way the town is being run and they want a change.”

The new council will meet for the first time next Monday, when a new mayor will be chosen.
