A church choir has raised more than £1,500 for the Bone Cancer Research Trust following the death of former Wallingford School pupil Alex Lewis.

Wallingford Parish Church Choir, right, which won a competition last year with record label Decca to record an album of popular hymns, staged two fundraising concerts over the Christmas period to raise money for the charity.

Alex Lewis, inset, from Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, joined the sixth form at Wallingford School in St George’s Road at the age of 16 and was diagnosed with bone cancer aged 17.

He was later the subject of a TV documentary, entitled Alex: A Life Fast Forward, which told how he coped with the disease and had married fiancée Ali Strain.

The couple married on Alex’s 22nd birthday on February 12 last year five days before he died.

In December, the church choir staged two concerts for the trust, with one raising £400 and the other £1,230.

Sue Ledger, who runs the choir at St Mary’s Church, said: “Alex’s sister Emma Parr has been a member of the choir for a long time so we held the concerts to raise funds for the trust in his memory.

“There was a full house at the concerts and people were very generous with their donations.

“The choir also sang at Alex’s wedding and his funeral.”

In October, pupils and teachers at Wallingford School completed an eight-mile round trip to Wittenham Clumps to raise an estimated £22,000 for the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

In November, a concert by the Wallingford Singers, also run by Mrs Ledger, raised £450 for Didcot-based South and Vale Carers Centre.
