THERE will be nothing terrifying about a night at the museum for visitors to one of Abingdon's most popular attractions.

Special evening openings will treat those who attend to folk music and one of the best views in town, according to County Hall museum.

This weekend the Abingdon landmark in Market Place will open its doors for the two evening events, featuring a candlelit tour around the exhibitions and a rooftop concert on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The venue's curator Matthew Stevens said: "It's part of a national scheme that has gathered momentum and become nationally recognised.

"Anyone can come along to see the museum after hours and enjoy live music, all in support of the museum to help it keep running.

"My mission is to try to get everyone [in Abingdon] involved in the museum some way, even if it's just to know what's there.

"This event is just one of the ways people can get in there and enjoy it."

The Museums at Night event will run from 7pm-10pm on Friday and Saturday, with the first evening offering free admission.

It will provide family craft sessions involving making tealight holders, and will offer a late-night look at artefacts and a printmaking exhibition.

The Saturday event will cost £7 for adults or £3 for children, and features live music on four floors of the museum while visitors enjoy the artefacts.

Mr Stevens said his highlight last year was the performance on the rooftop of the museum in Market Place, which is generally not open to the public.

He said: "It was stunning to see the sun setting there with the music playing - it's so lovely when you're there in that moment."

Bands will cover a range of genres from country and folk to classical, as well as a few tunes inspired by centuries past.

Tickets can be bought from the museum in advance or on the door.
