ABINGDON could soon become Abingdon-on-Thames if the Tory town council wins a vote tomorrow night.

Town mayor Mike Badcock’s bid to change the town’s name will be debated at a meeting tomorrow.

It is hoped the new name will attract tourists to the town.

Town council leader Sandy Lovatt said: “It is about branding Abingdon.

“The Thames has a strong international flavour.

“The Thames is a brilliant marque and helps to position Abingdon particularly to tourists and outside visitors.

“It is a good idea. It will help market Abingdon for the future.”

Tory member Katie Nobes, also lettings manager at Andrews Estate agents in High Street, said it would make the town more desirable.

She said: “It might not necessarily increase the value of the homes, but it will be nicer for people as the Thames has that internationally recognised name.”

Abingdon Chamber of Commerce member Jill Carver, owner of Added Ingredients, said: “It is a fantastic idea because it will let people know that we are on the River Thames and we are therefore a wonderful place to visit.

“We are one of the loveliest towns on the Thames and that should be acknowledged in our name.”

Liberal Democrat town council member Angela Lawrence said she would only oppose the move if it were to cost too much money and officer time.

She said: “To be quite honest I can’t see what is to be gained from it.”

She also said she could understand why it would appeal to those trying to promote the town to tourists, but added: “Historically it is Abingdon. So it would be a shame.”

The full council meets at 7pm in The Guildhall in Abingdon and the public are welcome to attend.
