RUGBY: We lost our way, admits London Welsh coach Jones
LYN Jones bemoaned London Welsh’s second-half display against Exeter Chiefs yesterday.
The Exiles’ head coach said: “I thought we were quite competitive for the first 40 minutes.
“We weren’t good enough for the second 40 minutes and we gave up.”
He added: “We were defending for so long today. Once the defence turned into attack, we just forgot what we were doing.
“We lost our shape and rugby is sport that when individuals make mistakes, it costs the team dearly. That’s what happened today.”
Welsh trailed by just three points on the hour, having led 9-8 at half-time and Jones felt there were some positives.
“We got back to 18-15 and then were done for a forward pass,” he said.
“Fair play to Exeter, they really played some nice stuff and we tired and fell off.
“It was a workout and an exercise for us in certain parts of the game, which we were quite pleased with.
“We are starting to pick our heads up a bit more in defence and the lineout work was good.”
Exeter’s skills coach Ricky Pellow said: “That last 20 minutes summed up how we wanted to play.
“We got control of the game and it was a real good performance. We carried well, we were strong at the breakdowns.
“It was a good battle for about 40 or 50 minutes. When we got control, we kept it and kept on top of them.
“A bonus-point win here has put us in good stead to face the Ospreys.”
