OXFORD City put in a valiant effort, but left Vanarama National League runaway leaders Chesterfield with a 2-0 defeat.

Will Grigg opened the scoring within the first sixty seconds, when he finished from a Liam Mandeville corner.

The Hoops were then awarded a penalty after Harvey Greenslade was upended by Spireites goalkeeper Harry Tyrer, who was booked, and then thwarted Josh Parker’s spot kick.

The home side doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second period, when Grigg and Tom Naylor linked up well down the right-hand side, with the latter then netting from a tight angle, finishing between the legs of Tom Watson, and off the post.

The hosts searched for a third goal of the night, and almost got it when Ash Palmer saw his effort cannon back off the post.

The Hoops remain bottom of the table, and are 14 points adrift of safety.
