MARK Harris is eyeing up a late spree of goals as he aims to hit his target by the end of the season.

The 25-year-old striker moved to 15 goals in all competitions following his brace at home to Fleetwood Town on Easter Monday.

With five games to go of the regular season, Harris hopes a late purple patch in front of goal can see him reach 20 strikes for the campaign.

The vast majority of Harris’ goals for Oxford United have come during streaks, including five in six at the beginning of the season, and seven in nine across January and February.

Of Harris’ 15 goals this campaign, 11 have come in Sky Bet League One, with three in the EFL Trophy and one in the Emirates FA Cup.

He said: “I’m trying to get my home goals up a bit more, but 15 in all competitions, with 11 in the league, and a few more games to go, hopefully I can reach my target.

“I’m hoping to get 20 in all competitions, and to get to 15 is nice, but we’ve got five more to go, and hopefully I can hit that soon.”

Harris’ first goal against the Cod Army was a classic poacher’s effort as he slid in to connect with Josh Murphy’s low cross, while the second was a heavily deflected strike from the edge of the penalty area.

He said: “As soon as I saw Cam [Cameron Brannagan] play the ball to Murph, I had to get in the box even though in the last couple of games, with a couple of them balls, I just hadn’t been there.

“The gaffer has been brilliant with me, and telling me where to be. I know I’ve got to get on the end of these balls, and I was happy to get on the end of that one, and see the ball hit the back of the net.

“I’m claiming the second one. It was on target and my goal.”

A tweak in system for the last three games has seen United line up in a 4-3-3 set-up, with two of the midfielders pushed high up the pitch in support of the attack.

Harris said: “Since we’ve gone to the one six and two eights or 10s, we can get more bodies higher up the pitch.

“I prefer that because then I’ve got a lot more to play, but then I can drop and the centre halves come with me.

“One of my main strengths is running in behind and I think teams have worked that out now, and they’re dropping early.

“We can all rotate and we all know what we’re doing in the system, and it’s working.”

Having made 47 appearances, with 43 of those starts, during his debut campaign with the U’s, Harris has carried the burden of leading the line in the majority of United’s 50 games so far this season.

He said: “That’s what I want to do. Will’s [Goodwin] a great player and has done well since he’s come in. Hopefully he’ll be back soon, but I want to lead the line and play every minute.

“I want to be the one that scores the goals to get us up, and hopefully I can keep doing that.”
