THREE games. Six days. While Oxford United might not be able to confirm a play-off spot during their upcoming crunch fixtures, they can almost certainly lose it.

Sitting sixth in Sky Bet League One, and two points clear of nearest challengers Lincoln City, the U’s are currently the side being targeted by the chasing pack.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks though, that can change game by game, as teams drop points unexpectedly.

United have completed the first, admittedly easier part, of their play-off mission, thanks to their win at Port Vale before the international break, and then draw at Shrewsbury Town, and handsome wins over Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion.

Yes, the draw in Shropshire was a frustrating one, especially given the late equaliser and inability to kill the game off prior to that.

However, Des Buckingham’s side have reacted in the right manner, displaying the ruthless streak which had previously been lacking.

Fleetwood and Burton were both brushed aside with ease, as the U’s hit four goals without reply in both games.

Mark Harris scored four of those eight goals, as he closes in on his 20-goal target with another of those purple patches between the posts.

Herald Series:

What will be pleasing for Buckingham is that United seem not just to be hitting form at the right time, but also clicking after a tweak in shape.

In the aftermath of the 5-0 mauling at Bolton Wanderers, Buckingham has opted for a 4-3-3 system with wingers Owen Dale and Josh Murphy high and wide, and two midfielders pushed on in advance of Cameron Brannagan as the single six.

Getting those players higher up the pitch naturally leads to the carving out of more goalscoring opportunities, while also pinning back opposition teams.

The back four resembles more of a traditional flat backline now, with the full backs not as involved further forward.

There are obviously times when they do support the attack, but the priority is defensive duties.

While some of the attacking play was lauded against Fleetwood and Burton, the clean sheets have also got to be recognised. Defensive solidity will be so important in the next three games.

And it’s those fixtures which are now the next test for the U’s. They’re a step up in challenge, and naturally bring additional pressure.

Peterborough United are the first visitors to the Kassam Stadium when they make the trip on Saturday, before Lincoln and Stevenage are in town the following Tuesday and Friday respectively. All three teams are currently in League One’s top nine and harbour promotion ambitions.

The three matches will pose different problems to solve, and United are going to need everyone together fighting on the same front, whether that be players, staff or supporters.
