FORMER Oxford United captain John Mousinho has been named the Sky Bet League One manager of the season.

Mousinho has led Portsmouth to the top of the table, with 91 points from 43 games. The south coast side have lost just four league games so far this season, and look certain to win the title.

After pipping Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson and Stevenage manager Steve Evans to the award, Mousinho told the EFL website: “When the call came in, I didn’t expect to be offered the job.

“I thank the club for taking that risk on me, and it was a big risk so it was a lot of faith that they put in me to do what we’re trying to achieve.

“The players have been incredible this year and we’ve got three lads in the team of the season, which gives me even more pride than winning this.

“The Portsmouth fans over the last 15 years have gone through a fair bit. For them to be able to experience a bit of success would mean the world to everyone connected to the football club and give the fans a reward for all of the hardship they’ve been through.”

Elsewhere, former United winger Jodi Jones was named the League Two player of the season, ahead of Mansfield Town midfielder Davis Keillor-Dunn and Wrexham forward Elliot Lee, who spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with the U’s.

In February, Jones broke the League Two assist record for a single season, and currently has 30 goal involvements this campaign (24 assists and six goals).

The League One player of the season was won by Posh captain Harrison Burrows, edging Pompey midfielder Marlon Pack and Derby County attacker Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to the award.

Posh centre back Ronnie Edwards scooped the League One young player of the season, beating Blackpool forward Karamoko Dembele and Wigan Athletic centre half Charlie Hughes.
