Paul Fernandez’s triumph in the senior men’s race capped a succesful day for Abingdon AC in the second round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League at Culham on Sunday.

Fernandez broke away near the end to record a time of 29mins 8secs and finish 22 seconds ahead of the runner-up Oxford Brookes's Josh Entwistle.

In the process he secured Abingdon’s third individual success of the morning.

Owen Stepney was the second under 20 runner to finish – in 17th place overall.

Abingdon’s Kie Francis produced a gritty display to win the boys’ under 11 event.

Charlotte Barwick dominated the girls’ under 13 race, and then produced a strong finish to repel a late challenge.

Abingdon's under 13 girls finished second in their team race, with all three scorers in the top ten.

Fiona Bunn rounded off a busy weekend by leading the club’s under 15/17 women home in second place (first in under 15).

Julia James headed Abingdon's senior women in 17th, and with solid backing from Carrie Bolton and the much-improved Jenny Bre-wer the team claimed third place in the division.

A depleted White Horse Harriers crashed to their worst team total since the league began and it will take an extraordinary effort in the next three rounds if Harriers are to retain their place in Division 1.

Sam Marshall, who had returned home from university in order to run, was taken ill and was forced to drop out at the end of the first lap when placed in the top 20.

Harriers' best performances were third places for Ros Burgess (LV45) and Ian Lambourn (V50).

Johnny James, of Radley, won the under 9 race.
