HANNAH England continues her injury comeback ahead of London 2012 tonight when she competes in the British Milers’ Club Solihull Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old Oxford City athlete runs in the 1,500m at the comparatively low-key meeting in a bid to regain sharpness ahead of the Olympics after a six-week Achilles injury lay-off.

Although England’s first race in London is just over two weeks away, the world silver medallist believes she can still be a contender. “I have got to be totally confident,” she said.

“There is no point being anything else. It is a waste of energy. “I really think I can do it. The progress I am making is massive and if I keep going at even 10 or 20 per cent of that improment, I think I will be alright.” England made her comeback when finishing last in the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace last Friday.

She said: “Physically, I do feel great. I have had some great training over the past few weeks. “I think I just didn’t have time to translate that into a racing performance at Crystal Palace. “I know it is there and this will have brought me on a lot.

Mentally it was important to put myself out here and race.” The Oxford Mail will be at the Games to report on England and our other local athletes, which she is happy about.

England said: “The Oxford Mail do a great job of covering me and my friends see it at home. “All their parents cut out the newspapers and give the articles to them. It is lovely.”

Meanwhile, double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes, who mentored England via her ‘On camp with Kelly’ scheme, revealed her delight at the Oxford athlete’s 2012 selection. “It is brilliant to think that I started this programme, which is keeping young people in the sport, and now they are maturing and on the Olympic team,” said Holmes.

“It was just brilliant to see Hannah back in track at Crystal Palace. Now she knows what she needs to work on in these next few weeks.

“My message to her is that you still have plenty of time. “I have been in there before where It is all ‘oh my gosh am I going to get there?’ and things can turn around just like that.”
