Wantage Town’s interest in the FA Carlsberg Vase ended in a second-round 3-0 defeat at Plymouth Parkway on Saturday.

The visitors paid the price for a lack of cutting edge against the hosts, who had lost only once in the South West Peninsula League this season.

Wantage started brightly and should have taken the lead on 13 minutes. Matt Pedder’s cross was headed goalwards by Rich Claydon only to see his effort hit a post.

Seven minutes later Pedder’s flick header was brilliantly saved by Ben Elphick in the home goal.

However, Wantage paid the price when Paul Heveran headed past Steve Howe in the Wantage goal.

Wantage should have levelled on 48 minutes when Pedder rounded the keeper only to blast his shot over.

The visitors thought they had won a penalty when Tom Butler was brought down, but the referee waved away their appeals.

Then Mark James had a header well saved by Elphick.

But with 15 minutes to go Plymouth went 2-0 up when Levi Landricombe tapped home after Howe dropped the ball in a challenge with the home striker.

As Wantage chased the game, Plymouth killed them off when Ryan Richards fired home.

Wantage almost got a goal back at the end, but Elphick saved substitute Harry Halls’s shot.
