DIDCOT Town’s five-match unbeaten run was ended by leaders Banbury United as they went down 1-0 at the Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium on Saturday.

Ricky Johnson struck the decisive blow from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West clash, sending goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell the wrong way.

The sides had cancelled each other out for much of the first half until Zac McEachran was tripped in the area and Johnson stepped up.

Didcot came close to equalising almost immediately after the restart when Marvin Martin fired in an effort from 35 yards that Banbury keeper Jack Harding did well to tip over.

The hosts looked the better team in the early stages of the second half, but did not seriously threaten the Banbury goal.

And the visitors remained dangerous on the break, with Harding launching an attack immediately after denying Mark Janes by setting Felipe Barcelos free with a long throw.

The Banbury man broke forward, but saw his shot hit a post.

Didcot subjected the away side to some considerable pressure in the closing stages, but were unable to force an equaliser

Wantage Town held visiting Wimborne Town to a 0-0 draw, keeping just their fifth clean sheet of the season.

Goalkeeper Eddie Cavanagh was called upon to block an early effort from the away side, but was seldom troubled thereafter.

Nick Kalakoutis was desperately unlucky not to put Wantage in front when he fired Sam Collier’s cross goalwards, only to see his effort headed off the line by Sam Davidson.

And Collier also went close to winning it for the home side in the second half with a powerful header from Cameron McNeil’s cross, forcing a fingertip save from goalkeeper goalkeeper Patrick O’Flaherty.

Wantage have moved another point closer to safety, but their gap over the drop zone was trimmed to just five points after Burnham won 1-0 at AFC Totton.

Wantage Tn: Cavanagh, Elliot, McNeill, Doyle (Francis 60), Hulbert-Thomas, Evans, Barder, Wrona, Johns (Trimbrell 87), Collier, Kalakoutis. Subs not used: Davies, Broad, R Cattell.
