FOOTBALL: Letcombe received their national FA Respect Award before Arsenal's Community Shield triumph over Chelsea at Wembley.

The Uhlsport Hellenic League side won the accolade for clubs in steps 5-7 of the national league system.

Captain Tom Stone and secretary Des Williams were guests at the match, while the club received £2,000 in prize money.

RACING: Wantage-based jockey Cathy Gannon hopes to be back in action this week after being forced to miss Ascot’s Shergar Cup meeting with a bruised collar-bone.

The 33-year-old rider sustained the injury when unseated on the way to the start at Chepstow last month.

West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon was among the winners at the meeting when Moonraker made a successful reappearance in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint.

It completed a successful 24 hours for Channon, who landed a 7-1 double at Newmarket the previous evening with Sixties Pilgrim and Nancy From Nairobi.

Elsewhere, Letcombe Bassett trainer James Bennett enjoyed a rare winner when 10-1 chance Idol Deputy romped home in an extended mile handicap at Wolverhampton, with Racheal Kneller on board.

BOWLS: Wantage were runaway winners of Division 3 West in the Kennet League.

They finished 27 points clear of runners-up Harwell.

Meanwhile Harwell's George Hicks has won through to the final of the Berkshire Unbadged Singles competition, which will be played at Thatcham BC on September 5.
