WANTAGE trainer Henry Candy admitted he was none the wiser whether Limato stays a mile or not after his charge finished fourth to Belardo in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

Sent off a well-backed 3-1 favourite for the Group 1 contest, the four-year-old was unable to land a blow in being beaten two and a half lengths.

Reflecting that his Kingston Warren stable’s runners have really to strike form yet, Candy said: “We could not say whether Limato stayed a mile or not from that run.

“If the yard’s form improve, that will lead me more to believe it was his condition today that caused him not to quite finish. I might be more bullish about going a mile again.”

West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon landed an 80-1 across-the-card treble courtesy of Visage Blanc (7-1) at Salisbury and Sayesse (7-2) and Summer Icon (5-4) at Newmarket.

The well-named Visage Blanc stuck her big white face out to score her first success with a two-lengths victory in a fillies’ handicap over a mile and a quarter under John Egan.

Sayesse followed up his Brighton victory with a short-head triumph in a six-furlong novice stakes, while Silvestre de Sousa got Summer Icon home by a head from Delve in a seven-furlongs maiden fillies’ stakes.

The champion jockey was also in the saddle as Channon struck with maiden winner Star Blaze back at Newmarket on Saturday, and Zig Zag Girl in a Ripon selling stakes.

Medieval made a winning debut for Whatcombe trainer Paul Cole when battling home to take a six-furlong maiden stakes at Newbury.
