ROBERT Harrhy missed out on reaching final qualifying for the Open Championship by a single stroke.

Playing on home soil at Frilford Heath, he fired two birdies on the back nine, but it was not quite enough.

A one-over-par round of 73 saw him finish eighth in the 90-strong field, but only the top six kept their hopes of taking their place in the prestigious field at Royal Troon alive.

Several other Frilford players fell short on the Red Course, where play had to be suspended for two hours after heavy rain flooded the greens.

Harry Collins and Elliot Bradley carded 78s, Lee White was a shot further back, while Ashley Walton shot an 83.

It was the second time in a week the weather had intervened at Frilford.

The 36-hole Gold Medal was cut short due to thunder and lightning.
