WALLINGFORD RC’s junior squad enjoyed a successful day amongst inglorious weather conditions at Reading Town Regatta, writes John Wiggins.
Both boys and girls J14 doubles and the J15 boys quad reached their finals, but they were unable to convert that form into victories.
This was not a problem for the girls J14 quad of Zoe Ray, Catriona Harrison, Leah Gordon, Alice Thorby and cox, Aoife McGurk.
They went on to a comfortable win over an Abingdon RC crew.
Meanwhile, J16s, James Willcox and Louis Wardle won a very tight battle in the novice doubles by half a length.
Georgia Swiatoniowska and Lucy Bird won an even tighter J17 race over two Oxford University lightweight crews in the IM2 doubles.
Wallingford’s senior rowers are looking forward to some fine racing at Henley Royal Regatta which starts today.
From coach Ben Reed’s high performance women’s sculling squad, the club is represented twice in the Princess Grace Challenge Cup.
Gemma Hall, Brianna Stubbs and Ellie Piggot, with Imogen Walsh of London University, are in a selected seeded crew, while another composite line-up qualified from Friday’s time trial racing.
This crew, which includes a Glasgow University sculler, contains Mary Wilson, Lisa Owen and Hanna Garvey.
The trio were all victorious at the recent Henley Women’s Regatta.
Both the junior boys and girls quads narrowly missed out on their qualifying races.
